Vegan Republicans, unite! All 2 of us!

March 7th, 2010

I’m a vegan who turned Republican. Here’s an article from a Republican who turned vegan. OK, well, almost vegan. He’ll get there.

Read the article: Rise Up, Vegan Republicans!

Yes, I know what you’re thinking – you’re either vegan or you’re not. But he is going vegan the same way I initially went vegetarian. I said I would eat vegetarian unless my dad was making me dinner. It’s called a transition period. So give the guy a break, and the benefit of the doubt, and read the article for the interesting points that he raises.

Here’s an excerpt:

Cultural anecdote two: “You can be a Republican who eats a vegan diet, but you can’t be a vegan and a Republican. Vegans value the sanctity of life, which is in conflict with Republican values.” So said a poster named Bart on Bart was adding to his thread called “vegan ideas and info are a threat to corporations, hence a threat to the GOP, hence Bush allows spying on vegans.”

I hadn’t noticed spy cams at my local Whole Foods in Los Altos, Calif., so I will be sure to glance up next time I’m inspecting the arugula. President Bush’s successor, we know, is both pro-arugula and pro-Patriot act. Surely that conflict is cleaving President Obama’s very soul. Bart could be right; the spy cams might still be up there.

Very funny. Still breaks my heart to see your name coupled with the word Republican but I love you anyway.

  2. Cassie Says:

    4 of us 🙂

  4. Alexa Says:

5 of us. I think there are a lot more. They just haven’t discovered your site. 🙂

Alexa sent me this great link:

    Cool! Thanks Alexa!

  6. Moondancer Says:

Oh, we’re definitely out there. I have a few conservative bloggers listed on my link list. Over the years, I’ve met quite a few online and in person. A few switched over after hanging out with me, which I thought was very cool.

I’m a Black, Vegan, and I happen to be Republican too, I still get shocked looks over that. I don’t get it, the views I hold are similar to the conservative party, so why wouldn’t I support them?

That being said, over the past few years, I’ve become disappointed with the Republican party. Some of the elected officials have strayed away from the core beliefs of the party. I’m disgusted, it’s time to do some cleaning and get rid of the phony’s.

That makes 10 of us!! Of course Republicans value the sanctity of life!!! Bart needs to get informed…..He probably may change his view and become the 11th!

  9. Mark Says:

I’m a full throated Conservative Republican, Jewish, and a conscientious Vegan! There are many more of us than you’d think, but we are subjected to a lot of abuse by people who “wouldn’t treat a dog like that”….

  10. Get Skinny, Go Vegan. Says:

Too funny, your Aunt Kathy!! I find that I like people who love animals, christian, pro life, pro choice, democrat, libertarian, what ever.
Although I am the “traditional” non republican vegan, (I LOVE Dennis Kucinich), I am NOT really in support of the Dems either at this point. I am not Christian. And in general, I may get along better with midwestern kind of gals more than super uber fake progressive west coasters, maybe……it’s the core of a person that counts, and it’s hard to tell the “core” from a voting record!! Through dog rescue I have met LOTS of republicans that I do adore……It is also important that we spread compassion through ALL walks of life. Rich, poor, republican, democrat, black, white, asian, etc….So I actually think it’s AWESOME that we are hearing from more vegan republicans.

  11. Scot Says:

I’m a vegan thinking of making the GOP switch. To me veganism is part of a whole life ethic that I feel is being attacked by the Democratic party. To me the pro-choice plank in the Dem platform is more of a direct threat to the sanctity of life than a general “meat and potatoes” attitude among Republicans. Still haven’t made up my mind but this issue is very important to me – and I think that the GOP will probably be easier to change just by showing up and letting them see that vegans are just normal people who share their life values, they just take it one step further.

  12. April Says:

I’m also a conservative and a vegan. Add me to the short list!

  13. Nikki Says:

    One more.

  14. Vegan Says:

Love to all you animal-loving Vegan brothers and sisters from a humble vegan born in a faraway land. You have proven that Veganism is a mindset, lifestyle, philosophy, and not just a diet. Individuals can be born into different faiths, ethnicities, races, nations etc but can still love people, plants, animals and the planet. Please continue to spread the love. Veganism is all about Love. Unite and love. Thanks and god bless 🙂

  15. Mary Beth Says:

I love it! I’m a vegan and a republican! It was so refreshing to find this site. Now I don’t feel like I’m the only one!

  16. Shackle Says:

Add another conservative vegan to the stack.

I’ve been vegan 20 years and conservative even longer. For a long time I have not identified myself as a Republican. That bloated mess of a political party does not represent conservatives any more than the Democrats do.

  17. JC Says:

New Vegan convert – I was an easy push. The idea of conserving the planet, conserving my body, loving others, kindness to animals, kindness to the unborn seem to fit together for me.

  18. Angela Says:

Conservative and brand new vegan convert here! I’m excited to see that there are others out there.

  19. Karin Says:

I’m a Vegan Republican! 🙂 Pretty new vegan, but always have been a Republican. One more…

  20. bmmg39 Says:

Yes, unite. And someone who is “almost vegan” is “almost vegan.” That is a thing…
